Ahmed and Goggle

Slightly foxed

Goggle the turkey was lonely, so in April we bought her a mate. He did his best, strutting, gobbling and pirouetting most spectacularly. Unfortunately he was rather young, and not really stag enough for a discerning older female. After two weeks of mutual frustration, she ignored him. Obviously feeling rejected, he refused to go to bed one night, and in the morning was gone. A family of foxes had Christmas early—and unfortunately now knew where to come for dinner. They got through more than twenty fowl over the summer, though did have the grace to leave a few casualties for the freezer. Two victims had astonishing recoveries following open-hen surgery.
